Chandigarh, July 30:

Horticulture Minister of Punjab Chetan Singh Jaudamajra today invited the farmers to plant fruit trees and said that the horticulture department is providing these trees at economical rates. He said that this initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to promote crop diversification across the state.

He said that the monsoon season is suitable for planting fruit trees and this initiative of the government will offer a sustainable alternative to the traditional wheat-paddy cropping cycle, which has greatly reduced the groundwater level.

The Horticulture Minister strongly appealed for cultivation of various fruit trees including mango, guava, litchi, chiku, different varieties of citrus fruits, jamun and jackfruit. He said that these plants are available at reasonable prices in government nurseries running under Horticulture Department.

Meanwhile, Gardening Director Mrs. Shalindar Kaur, IFS, Said that for more information about getting saplings from nurseries, farmers can contact the nodal officer of horticulture department on mobile number 7508018803.

She said that by planting fruitful trees, the environment and water will be conserved, while crop diversity will be boosted and the income of farmers will increase significantly.

Mrs. Shalinder Kaur requested the Chief Minister to provide full support to the farmers of Punjab to adopt more sustainable and economically beneficial farming techniques. Reiterating the commitment of the government led by Bhagwant Singh Mann, She said that this initiative is part of the comprehensive efforts being made to solve the environmental problems while increasing the economic potential of the agricultural sector of the state.
