Fern House is a historic building located in the Baradari Gardens of Patiala, Punjab. It was built in 1876 by Maharaja Rajinder Singh and serves as a unique attraction in the gardens, which are known for their beautiful landscapes and rare trees and shrubs.
Architecture and Design
The fern house is hexagonal shaped, laid out in the corner of the garden spread out in . 08 kanal area. It is built on a 3.5 ft high wall which is made of bricks from outside and over ripe stones from inside. There are 96 higher and lower vulcanized steel gauge placed in it. There are more than 22 fountains which are small and big supported by 32 sprinklers and artificial rain can be created when needed for the fern house plants.
History
Fern House was constructed as a residence for Maharaja Rajinder Singh, who brought rare species of trees and flowers from different places and planted them in the Baradari Gardens. The gardens were laid under Maharaja Rajinder Singh, who also restored the Baradari Palace, which now houses important historical documents.
Significance
Fern House is the first heritage hotel in Punjab, offering a glimpse into the rich history and culture of the region. The Baradari Gardens, which surround the Fern House, are a popular tourist destination in Patiala, showcasing the beauty of nature and the architectural splendor of the Mughal era.
